How to Choose the Right Teapot Size Based on the Number of People?

Hello everyone, I’m tea enthusiast Andy.

Brewing tea with a teapot not only fully brings out the flavor of the tea

but also helps bring people closer together during the tea-drinking experience.

When friends visit, how do you choose the right teapot size?

How to Measure Teapot Capacity?

There are two main methods:

1. Using a measuring cup

fill the teapot with water, then pour it into a measuring cup to determine the capacity.

2. Using a scale

place the teapot on a scale and subtract its weight.

Then, fill it with water and measure the total weight to calculate its capacity (1 gram of water is approximately 1 milliliter).

Important Note:

Since tea leaves take up space, the actual water volume will be slightly less when brewing tea.

Most teapots have a rounded capacity. For example, if you measure 123 ml, the actual capacity is likely around 120 ml.

To avoid forgetting, you can use a pencil to mark the capacity on the bottom of the teapot for future reference.

The Relationship Between Teapot Capacity and Teacup Size

When choosing a teapot size, consider the teacup capacity and the number of people drinking.

A typical teacup holds 15 to 30 ml, with an average of 20 ml per cup.

You can use the following formula to determine the required teapot capacity:

Teapot Capacity (ml) = Cup Capacity × Number of People

For example, if there are 4 people drinking tea, an 80 ml teapot will be sufficient.

What If You Choose the Wrong Teapot Size?

Choosing the wrong teapot size can affect the tea experience,

especially if the teapot's unique design makes it challenging to judge its size visually.

For instance, a teapot may only pour enough tea for 2 people at a time when serving 4 people, which is a common issue.

Solution

You can mix the first and second brews together so that all 4 people can enjoy the tea evenly.

However, this reduces the number of times the tea can be brewed—from 5 times to 2.5 times, impacting the tea’s flavor progression.

Additionally, teapot size isn’t unlimited.

For example, if 30 people are drinking tea and each person gets 20 ml, the ideal teapot size would be 600 ml.

However, such large teapots are rare, and even if found, a full teapot might weigh around 1 kg, making it difficult to handle.

Recommended Approach

The largest commonly available teapots hold about 250 ml, enough for 12 people.

If serving a larger group, consider preparing multiple teapots at the same time.

Just ensure there is enough hot water available to keep the process smooth.

I hope this information is helpful. Wishing you all a great tea-brewing experience! See you next time!
